After much delay, the work relating to laying of the Under Ground Drainage (UGD) scheme in Guntur has begun. Shapooriji Pallonji, the construction majors who have been given the contract to construct the Secretariat at Velagapudi, would be undertaking the work under the supervision of the Public Health Department.
The UGD is being taken up with the Central funding along the storm water drainage scheme being taken up in Vijayawada.
After laying the foundation for the scheme at the SVN Colony along with Guntur West MLA M. Venugopala Reddy, Municipal Commissioner S. Nagalakshmi said the UGD lines would run for 1,083 km in the city and the merged villages covering 1.03 lakh houses. The city would be divided into five zones and the UGD work would be completed by 2018.
Mr. Venugopal Reddy appealed to the Commissioner to ensure that all pits dug up to lay the UGD pipelines were covered within two weeks. The main two components of the project are sewage treatment plant and laying of sewerage. Under the project, five sewage treatment plants each with a capacity of 125 MLD and pipelines extending to 1,000 km would be laid. Funds to the tune of 70% of the project would be spent on the plants and pipelines while 25% would be used for treatment of sewage water.
Superintending Engineer, Public Health, S. Srinivasulu, was also present.
