Ensuring the highest standards of safety should be part of a culture that one needs to imbibe, said panellists at two-day seminar on ‘Industrial Safety’, which held at GITAM University’s Hyderabad campus on Wednesday.
“Safety is a culture which we do not follow. We have to inculcate this habit,” said M.P. Naidu, project manager at L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad.
He recounted an instance when a loud sound – due to the fall of some material from the top of building – send some foreigners scurrying for cover under their meeting table. The Indians, on the other hand, rushed to the window to check what happened. The foreigners came out only they were assured of safety.
The large of number of farm hands that come work at sites in the construction industry, are untrained and this was a major reason for accidents.
“Those who have been trained will leave for the fields again after working for three months. The industry has to train about 2 lakh workers to get continuous work from about 25,000 workers,” he explained, adding that safety, quality and cost were important for the sustenance of any industry.
L. Krishna Rao, a professor and international consultant, said that many accidents could be prevented by following approved global standards. Temperature sensors, fire-sensors, smoke detectors and fire-fighting systems should be installed at every industrial site to prevent accidents, Mr. Krishna Rao said.
The programme was presided over by Campus Director Ch. Sanjay.
