Congress seeks arrest of UoH Vice-Chancellor

January 18, 2017 12:54 am | Updated 12:54 am IST - VIJAYAWADA:

The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) has demanded that University of Hyderabad Vice-Chancellor P. Appa Rao be arrested for allegedly abetting the suicide of Rohith Vemula.

PCC official spokesperson Kolanukonda Sivaji, general secretary Meesala Rejeswara Rao and Vijayawada City Congress president Malladi Vishnu in a memorandum submitted to Sub-Collector Saloni Sadani, on the first death anniversary of the student on Tuesday, said the issues raised by the research scholar before he committed suicide were still topics of intense discussion in society. Though Dalit associations, civil society and political parties have been demanding legislation to prevent more students taking their lives, those in power were not ready to enact one, the memorandum said.

Better late than never and the vice-chancellor should be taken into custody. The politicians that extended support to the Vice-Chancellor should also be brought to book, the Congress leaders said.
