Attempt to murder case against warden

The A. Kondur police probing the suspicious burning case of an eighth standard student, Vempati Praveen Kumar of Marepalli village, altered the case under Section 307 of IPC (attempt to murder) and took up investigation.

The boy, who was studying in a local government school, suffered burns on January 26 and was undergoing treatment in the Government General Hospital (GGH), Vijayawada. He was staying in Mother Teresa Home at Khambampadu village in A. Kondur mandal in Krishna district.

Initially, Praveen Kumar told the police said that he set fire to himself after dousing his body with petrol. Later, he reportedly complained that hostel warden Katuru Venkateshwara Rao set him on fire.

Nuzvid DSP V. Srinivas said the section of the law altered in the case and police are investigating on the reason that led to the incident. “We will record the statements of other inmates, nearby residents and the hostel warden. The condition of the boy is critical,” the DSP told The Hindu .
