9 killed in road accident in East Godavari dt.

Nine persons were killed in a major accident near Kothapeta in East Godavari on Sunday when a truck carrying coconuts hit an autorickshaw with 11 persons in it belonging to Bheemanapalli village in Uppalaguptham mandal in Konaseema. Of the dead, seven persons were from a single family. Four women and a child died on the spot, while two others succumbed while fighting for their lives at Kakinada General Hospital.

Head-on collision

According to Sudhakar Rao, Ravulapalem Inspector of police, an auto driver took his family members and left for Ravulapalem on Sunday morning around 7 a.m. When his auto carrying 11 persons was crossing Gollagottuvaripalem on the outskirts of Modugunta village, a truck with a load of coconuts heading to Amalapuram rammed the auto coming from the opposite direction.

The auto overturned and split into two when the truck hit it and dragged it to the right side of the road. The driver, Chetla Durgarao (40), his wife Durga (35), Papayamma (60), Nagamani (45), Balakrishna (35), Nani (12), Nedunuri Manga (45) were killed on the spot, while Chetla Chitti (2) and Chetla Venkateswara Rao (50) succumbed to injuries in the afternoon at Kakinada Government General Hospital. The two other who sustained grievous injuries are Chetla Pallaiah (24) and Jyothi (4) and are undergoing treatment.

East Godavari SP Vijaya Kumar rushed to the spot and GV Harsha Kumar, MP, visited the spot and the Kakinada General Hospital and subsequently also visited Bheemanapalli village in Uppalaguptam mandal in his constituency.

Car plunges into canal

Guntur Staff Reporter adds: Fortyfive-year-old K. Padmavathi and her son, K. Pranav (24), were killed when the car in which they were travelling plunged into a canal on Sunday. The vehicle driver lost control and the car fell into Kollevagu from the bridge at Savalyapuram. Pranav died on the spot, while his mother succumbed while being shifted to hospital, said the Savalyapuram police who are investigating the case.
