Fifty activists of Progressive Democratic Students Union (PDSU) were arrested on Saturday when they tried to storm into Andhra Pradesh Secretariat here, raising slogans demanding creation of a separate Telangana state, police said.

The activists, including PDSU President Ashok Kumar and Secretary Gautam Prasad were taken into custody after they squatted in front of the Secretariat main gate preventing people from entering in the building.

Protesters jostled with police when the latter tried to evict them following which cops lathicharged to dispel the mob.

The police then closed the entrance gates of the Secretariat even as additional police forces rushed in to control the situation.

The arrested activists have been taken to Nampally police station.
