Karimnagar Member of Parliament Ponnam Prabhakar said that the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has decided to provide wireless broad band services to Karimnagar district through wi-max technology next month. Speaking after inaugurating the BSNL 3G mobile services here on Thursday, Mr. Prabhakar said wi-max technology will be introduced in two phases.

In the first phase, the BSNL authorities have identified 11 locations and equipment for the same had already arrived. In the second phase, wi-max technology would be extended to 30 more locations, he added. Calling upon people to use the public sector BSNL phone services, including cellular phones for quality, efficiency and reliability, he said that the cell phone towers do not cause any radiation or affect on people. He said the BSNL authorities could not install about 30 cell phone towers due to opposition from the public about the fears of radiation in the district. He said the World Health Organiation (WHO) had also stated that there are no radiation incidents due to cell phone towers.

BSNL district General Manager B.C. Nagaraju said that they had already installed 20 towers for providing 3G mobile phone services in district and are planning to install 16 more towers very soon. He said BSNL Karimnagar district has 43,000 landline phone customers, 7,111 wireless on local loop (WLL) phone customers, 7,426 broad band customers, 1,68,358 cell phone pre-paid customers and around 4,000 cell phone post-paid customers.

He said that they were unable to provide cell phone towers in Mahamutharam mandal in the district because of security reasons.
