33 persons killed in Andhra road mishap

Tragedy struck a marriage party this evening when 33 of its members, including 15 women and some children, were killed and 24 injured seriously as the van they were travelling in collided head-on with a lorry in Andhra Pradesh’s Adilabad district, police said.

The accident took place on NH-16 near Danabanda village in Mancherial mandal around 6:30 p.m., Adilabad SP P. Pramod Kumar said.

The injured were shifted to a hospital in Mancherial town.

The deceased include 15 women and some children and the driver of the van and the toll was likely to go up, Kumar told PTI.

The victims were on their way back home to Kothur village after attending a marriage in Rampur of Kazipur mandal, a police officer supervising the shifting of the injured to a hospital in Mancherial town, said.

Around 80 people were travelling in the van, the officer said.

Vehicular movement on the Adilabad-Laxitpet town came to a grinding halt following the mishap.
