Police counsel parents to educate their daughter

The Basanthnagar police have prevented the marriage of a 15-year-old girl with a 26-year-old man already married, at GD Nagar of Basanthnagar industrial area in Ramagundam mandal on Thursday.

Peddapalli Circle Inspector T. Srinivas Rao said that marriage of N. Sowmya, who completed her SSC, was fixed with her own brother-in-law Yakub (26) a private employee, on Thursday by her parents. Yakub married Sowmya’s sister and was blessed a son who is now four-years-old. Sowmya’s sister is suffering from a serious ailment and is unable to take care of her son and is bed-ridden.

Her parents decided to perform the marriage with Yakub to take care of her sister and the child. Following the information, the police team led by Basanthnagar Sub-Inspector Ramesh prevented the marriage even before the bridegroom arrived at the marriage pandal.

Irked by the stoppage of the marriage, the parents of the Sowmya doused themselves in kerosene and threatened to commit suicide.

However, the police prevented their attempt and counselled them about the importance of education of girl child and asked them to perform their daughter’s wedding only after she attained 18 years.

After persistent pleas by police and opposition to marriage by Sowmya, the dejected parents stopped the child marriage.

Villagers chip in
