The District Early Intervention Centre (DEIC) attached to the district Medical and Health Department has come as a boon to more than 10 lakh students, in addition to the children in the age group of 0 to 6, who will be screened for 30 ailments.

The DEIC came into being on the premises of District Headquarters hospital here with the objective of identification of physical and mental disorders among children and extend corrective therapy, medical and surgical procedures to them.

The DEIC is equipped with a team of experts in paediatric care.

Divisions to treat cases of physiotherapy, dental and eye problems have been set up.

The Rashtirya Bala Swastha Karyakram (RBSK) district officer and DEIC in-charge, Dr. A. Sudarshan said the centre would cover 30 aspects of health, covering defects at birth, deficiencies, deformities and developmental delays.

“The parents, Anganwadi and elementary teachers should play a major role in early identification of children with such problems. Delay in treatment might turn into permanent disabilities,” Dr. Sudarshan said.

“One more DEIC centre will come up at Tirupati soon,” Dr. Sudarshan said.
