The Prakasam district administration will undertake an ambitious literacy programme from December 1 to make the backward district cent per cent literate in 100 days.
Primary Education Minister S. Sailajanath, the district in-charge minister, will launch the programme in Ongole on Sunday to make about 10 lakh people over the age of 15 years literate and make a mark in human development, district Collector G.S.R.K.R.Vijaykumar told a press conference here.
He said the programme would be organised in an equal number of centres across the district to cover about 30 illiterates each by roping in 34,000 volunteers.
The entire district administration, from the level of the district Collector to Village Revenue Officer, would leave no stone unturned to achieve the target by March 15 and make the neo-literates fit for writing the exams between March 20 and 25.
As many as 10,000 teachers would provide training to the volunteers, he said before holding a preparatory meeting with head masters. The state government would chip in with its contribution in the form of books, he added.
The focus would be on reaching out to tribal people, fishermen and other vulnerable sections of people scattered across the district, he explained, adding that their performance would be reviewed periodically.
He noted with concern that the literacy rate in the district was only 63 per cent as against the state average of 64 per cent and the national average of 74 per cent in the 2011 census.
Survey
A survey showed that 2.02 lakh people were without individual sanitary latrine (ISL), he said, adding one lakh households in the district were provided with ISL and the remaining would be covered soon.
