CHITTOOR: Four children of the Anganwadi Centre at Veluthurusenu village of Bangarupalem mandal, who were administered bovine medicine mistaking it for iron syrup on Thursday, were declared safe by the doctors at the Government District Headquarters Hospital here on Friday.

The Rashtriya Bala Swastha Karyakram (RBSK) district officer, Annareddy Sudarsan, said that during preliminary inquiry it was found that the ayah (children’s caretaker) at the Anganwadi centre gave the bovine medicine to the four children on Thursday evening. “The ayah instead of giving iron syrup to the children administered the bovine medicine. While four kids gulped the medicine, a few spat it out immediately and the rest didn’t take it at all. The four kids are under observation now though they are safe. They will be discharged on Saturday,” Dr. Sudarsan said.

Parents deplored that the Anganwadi centre was being operated from a portion belonging to the adjoining veterinary hospital in the village. “Flies and other insects from the hospital are attacking the kids regularly and the provisions meant for the children’s midday meal and the bovine medicines are kept side by side on the same compound. Though we have brought this to the notice of the ICDS officials, there is no response from them so far,” they alleged.
