TIRUPATI: Elucidating the advantages of a knowledge-driven economy, Government of India’s Principal Scientific Adviser R. Chidambaram called for sustainable international partnerships in science, with cooperation on an equal partner basis.

Delivering a public lecture during the 104th Indian Science Congress here on Thursday, Dr. Chidambaram said that national development and security, both two sides of the same coin, should go hand in hand, as the former would be vulnerable without the latter.

“India of our dreams should be the one which is economically developed and scientifically advanced, particularly with an excellent research and innovation ecosystem. It should also have energy, water, nutritional and health security. To achieve this, international partnerships have an important role to play,” he maintained.

Dr. Chidambaram, who spoke on ‘International Partnerships in Science’, detailed the country’s contributions and international participation, right from the superconducting connector magnets for Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN to the Indian Tsunami Early Warning Centre (ITEWC).

He further highlighted Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) trusted workhorse, Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which launched 75 satellites of 20 countries with 32 successive launches, and about the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) to be constructed in India.
