The clamour seeking resignation of P.J. Kurien, Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, just got louder. On Saturday, Bangalore South MP H.N. Ananthkumar said Mr. Kurien must resign immediately over his alleged involvement in the Suryanelli sex scandal case. "There are serious allegations against Mr. Kurien. Given the severity of the allegations, he must resign," he said.

Mr. Ananthkumar was speaking to reporters after inaugurating a 61-foot tall clock tower near South End Circle, here. He said that the Centre was already bogged down by several scams, including 2G, 3G, Adarsh Housing Society, Common Wealth Games and Coalgate. He said: "The latest scam is the Rs. 3,600-crore helicopter deal with AgustaWestland, U.K. What is shocking is the alleged involvement of Congress vice-preisdent Rahul Gandhi."

Stating that an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) would not suffice, he demanded a judicial probe. "The CBI is a hand-puppet of the Congress. Let the Centre form a committee comprising a retired Supreme Court judge to investigate this scam," he said.

About the clock tower, he said that it was a personification of the "development mantra" of the BJP government in the state. "The clock will remind citizens that the BJP has worked for development 24/7 with its chimes."

Deputy Chief Minister R. Ashok, who was present at the function, concurred and said that Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar had allocated special grants for the development of the city, with emphasis on health and women.

He also said that there was no clock tower in the southern part of Bangalore. Claiming that this clock tower would become the new landmark, he said the clock chimes would be heard within a three-km radius between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m.
