The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Wednesday constituted a two-member committee to prepare a report on the conduct of expelled geology student Mannan Bashir Wani. The University administration also increased the vigil in halls of residences.
“A committee has been constituted by Vice-Chancellor Professor Tariq Mansoor to submit a report on the activities of Mannan Bashir Wani, within a week. Prof. S.H. Arif heads the committee with Prof. Kamlesh Chandra as a member,” said Officiating Dean of Students’ Welfare Prof. Md. Saghir Khan.
He said the provosts and wardens of various halls of residences were making frequent rounds till late hours for keeping a watch on their respective halls. He added that no unauthorised persons would be allowed to enter the halls.
“Students will be allowed to enter the halls only after producing the valid AMU ID card issued by the Office of Dean, Students’ Welfare. Students have also been asked to refrain from interacting with unauthorised persons,” said Prof. Khan. .
He further said that provosts of various halls had been asked to ensure that every room was occupied by its legitimate residents and that CCTV cameras were in working condition.
The measures are in place after reports surfaced that Wani, a research scholar in the department of geology, had joined a terror organisation. A picture of him holding an AK-47 rifle had surfaced on social media.
The university has suspended Wani, who belongs to Jammu and Kashmir. “Since Wani had breached the AMU Students’ Conduct and Discipline Rules, 1985, the matter was placed before the Vice-Chancellor who ordered his immediate suspension,” Prof. Khan said, adding that the AMU had “zero tolerance towards such activities and accords top priority to national security and will give full support and cooperation to police and investigating agencies.”
