Amnesty International India has demanded dropping of all charges against Irom Sharmila and her immediate release.
Three functionaries of Amnesty International India, G. Ananda, chief executive, Raghuman and Durga Nandy called on Ms. Sharmila on Tuesday, in the security room at the J.N. Institute of Medical Sciences where she is lodged after it was declared a sub jail.
Talking to reporters at the Press Club in Imphal, they said the Supreme Court had recognised fasting as a form of protest. At least 16,000 activists are supporting Ms. Sharmila’s campaign. They also disclosed that 300 children from Bangalore had written to Ms. Sharmila pledging their support to her cause. The letters were handed over to Ms Sharmila on Tuesday.
The functionaries said the Manipur chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh should drop the charges against Ms. Sharmila. She faces, among others, an attempt to commit suicide charge.
