The fact that he dug in his heels in the State, when others were fleeing, his towering presence, his love for music and his silence which conveyed more than words were among the aspects that found mention at a condolence meeting of R.P. Goenka arranged by FICCI, the Indian Chamber of Commerce, CII and the Merchants Chamber of Commerce.
Among those present were: S.K. Birla, Deepak Khaitan, Sisir Bajoria, K.K. Bangur, C.K. Dhanuka, Guarav Swarup, Dipak Jalan, Rajiv Mundhra, former Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, Rajya Sabha member N.K. Singh and West Bengal Chief Secretary Sanjay Mitra
Mr. Chatterjee said that as far as West Bengal was concerned there was no question of repaying the debt to Goenka who expanded his business activity during difficult times.
Speaking of a man he knew for 49 years, Mr. Singh said that it was wrong to describe Goenka as a takeover king. “He should be called makeover king as he shaped lives by taking keen interest in academia, society and heritage. He leaves behind a challenge for this generation,” he said.
