The BJP has backed the ongoing aggressive security operations in the Kashmir Valley to the hilt, dismissing Opposition charges that a security lapse led to the terror attack on Amarnath yatris on Monday night.

BJP general secretary Ram Madhav, the party in-charge for Jammu and Kashmir, said the attack was not due to a security lapse.

“The yatra had been on peacefully for the past 15 days, and security forces had been foiling terror attempts 100 out of 100 times. The terrorists need to succeed only once,” Mr. Madhav said.

Sources in the party said the attack on the pilgrims was a sign that “terrorists were getting desperate” and the “operations were effective”.

“There has to be an unambiguous condemnation of terror, and a recognition that such attacks are a sign of desperation at the aggressive crackdown by security forces,” said a party source.

There was no response from the party when asked about Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Praveen Togadia’s demand that the Jammu and Kashmir government (a coalition between the Peoples Democratic Party and the BJP) be dismissed.
