Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav’s attempts to publicise the development initiatives taken by his government through hoardings across Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar ahead of the three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) starting January 7 has caught the BJP government in Gujarat unawares.

The three-day Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas (PBD) begins on January 7 in Gandhinagar.

Local bodies are now removing the hoardings erected by agencies on contract with the Uttar Pradesh government.

Senior Uttar Pradesh officials have taken up the matter with their counterparts in Gujarat.

The U.P. government had put up around 100 “U.P. Rising” hoardings and billboards on the route from the airport to the PBD venue. Government sources say Mr. Yadav is miffed over removal of these hoardings, which were to stay till January 15.

“Uttar Pradesh is a partner State in this year’s PBD...We had put up these hoardings to showcase steps the State government has been taking to attract investments. A lot of NRIs, particularly from Uttar Pradesh, visit the PBD and we wanted to give them a message through these hoardings,” an official spokesperson told The Hindu .

Mr. Yadav will address a special session of the PBD on January 9. “The Chief Minister will lead a high-level team of officials at the PBD...He will hold meetings with prominent NRIs and ask them to invest in the State,” the spokesperson added.
