The Modi government has given further extension to the Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth for a period of six months beyond December 13.

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) approved extension in service to Mr. Seth who belongs to the 1974 batch of U.P. cadre of IAS.

Mr. Seth is the seniormost serving bureaucrat in the country and was appointed the Cabinet Secretary by the UPA government in June 2011 for a two-year tenure. His term was extended for one year by the then Manmohan Singh government and the BJP-led Modi government which came to power in May this year also extended his tenure by six months.

A quiet, low-profile bureaucrat, Mr. Seth is known for his efficient way of functioning and has handled matters relating to co-ordination in the Cabinet Secretariat in various capacities. As the top bureaucrat in the country, Mr. Seth’s handling of the administrative matters and reforms as set out by the BJP government is believed to have impressed Mr. Modi who has preferred to continue with him by giving extension in service.

After the appointment of new CBI Director Anil Sinha, the BJP government has to appoint heads of the two intelligence agencies this month as tenures of both Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW) chief Alok Joshi and Intelligence Bureau Director Syed Asif Ibrahim are coming to an end.
