Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Friday announced plans to set up an AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences) in each State in a phased manner. Replying to a starred question in the Lok Sabha, he said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had requested Chief Ministers of various States to identify land for this.
The Andhra Pradesh government had already identified land in Guntur district for the proposed institute, he said, adding there was no specific timeline for setting them up.
The government announced four more AIIMS-like centres in the Budget tabled on Thursday. Six new AIIMS campus have come up under the first phase of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) in Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh. The first batch of 50 MBBS students and the second batch of 100 MBBS students were admitted to each of these six new AIIMS during 2012-13 and 2013-14 respectively.
The Minister said outdoor patient department (OPD) services were functional at each of the six new AIIMS. The Rae Bareli AIIMS project, covered under the second phase of the PMSSY, was under implementation and the State government had transferred 98 acres for this.
