Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa on Saturday said her party was yet to finalise its strategy on the presidential poll candidature and no concrete proposal had been brought to her so far by any one.
She was talking to journalists here before leaving for Chennai after participating in the conference on “National Counter-Terrorism Centre.”
Ms. Jayalalithaa was replying to a question on whether her party would support Pranab Mukherjee for the post.
Ms. Jayalalithaa's statement comes even as her arch rival and DMK president M. Karunanidhi announced in Chennai that the DMK would support Mr. Mukherjee if all the parties in the UPA rallied behind him.
The AIADMK has nine members in the Lok Sabha, five in the Rajya Sabha and 149 members in the Assembly. During the 2007 presidential poll the AIADMK supported NDA's nominee Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and in the 2002 poll both the AIADMK and the DMK voted for A.P.J. Abdul Kalam for the post. Mr. Kalam hails from Ramanathapuram district in Tamil Nadu.
On Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's observation that the NCTC was not a Centre versus States issue, Ms. Jayalalithaa said: “that is not the perception of the Chief Ministers.”
On the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, she said the project was set to generate power in about 10 days.
About the Mullaperiyar dam issue, she said her government's stand was vindicated by the Supreme Court-appointed Empowered Committee's report which concluded that the reservoir was safe. “That is what we have been saying all along,” she said.
