In an indirect jibe at Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who on Thursday hit out at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Independence Day address, BJP patriarch L.K. Advani said that on such an occasion leaders should not be critical of others.

Speaking after unfurling the national flag at his residence here, Mr. Advani said, “I heard the Prime Minister today ... Today on Independence Day, without criticising anybody, we all should realise that India has unlimited potential for the future.”

The BJP veteran said, “India has unlimited potential for the future. This past decade which, as the Prime Minister said today, will get over in 2014. He has enumerated the achievements and the shortcomings of this decade. We should now be concerned about making the decade starting from 2014 an unprecedented one in India’s history. We should give it the best performance we can.”

Mr. Advani is not reconciled to Mr. Modi’s elevation in the party and a day after he was anointed as the national election campaign chief, the senior leader quit three top posts. He withdrew the resignation only after the RSS brass prevailed on him while clearly conveying the message that there would be no rethink on Mr. Modi’s elevation.
