BJP parliamentary party chairman L.K. Advani on Thursday advocated for introduction of “compulsory voting” in the country also saying it was not impossible to bring in such a legislation.

He was chatting with journalists here after unfurling the national flag at his residence on the occasion of Republic Day.

He also supported the Election Commission’s move to achieve cent per cent voters’ enrolment and wanted the EC to ensure that all the registered voters cast their ballot.

"What is more important is that the voting percentage should increase and if possible it should be near the cent per cent mark,” he said.

“...I don't find compulsory or mandatory voting as something which is impossible in India... people have to be encouraged that they fulfil their responsibility towards democracy”. Voting should be a fundamental responsibility of the citizens to ensure an honest administration.

He pointed out that some of the BJP-ruled States (read Gujarat) had passed legislations for compulsory voting but they were yet to be approved by the respective State Governors.
