The Central Bureau of Investigation has once again sought permission from the Maharashtra government to prosecute former Congress Chief Minister Ashok Chavan in the Adarsh housing society scam.
The CBI has made the request to Maharashtra governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao seeking permission to prosecute Mr. Chavan in the scam that resulted in the Congress leader's resignation as Chief Minister in 2010.
Earlier, Governor K Sankaranarayanan had denied permission to CBI to prosecute him.
Mr. Chavan was among the 13 people chargesheeted by the CBI in the Adarsh scam in July 2012. Though other accused, including top IAS officers and office bearers of Adarsh Housing Society, a 30 storey high-rise in Colaba, were arrested, Mr Chavan's prosecution requires permission from the Governor.
The former Governor's refusal to permit Mr. Chavan's prosecution had led to his political rehabilitation. Mr. Chavan was among the few Congress leaders to survive the Modi charisma during the campaign, and got elected as an MP from Nanded. The party also subsequently appointed him State Congress chief.
