The aim is to verify his intention in drawing the controversial cartoons
The Mumbai Police have ordered a probe by the Assistant Commissioner of Police to investigate the charges against cartoonist Aseem Trivedi, Mumbai Additional Commissioner of Police (West Region) Vishwas Nangre-Patil told The Hindu here on Thursday.
“The investigation has been transferred to ACP G.T. Padwal. Three officers have been assigned for his aid. The team will verify the entire case once again,” Mr. Nangre-Patil said.
He said the main purpose of the team was to verify the cartoonist’s intention behind drawing the cartoons.
“The team will verify all the details of the case. Especially the intention behind drawing the cartoons will be taken very seriously,” he said.
Dalit leaders had alleged that Mr. Trivedi, who has been booked under sedition charges, insulted and hurt their feelings by allegedly mocking Buddhist symbols (the Ashoka pillar was depicted in a cartoon by Mr. Trivedi).
ACP G.T. Padwal told The Hindu that the team, after thorough investigation, would submit a report to the court.
“It is wrong to call it an SIT [Special Investigation Team]. It is not an SIT. I have been assigned the task of seeing if there are any lacunae in the investigation made by the Bandra-Kurla police so far. Since I do not have much staff under me, I have been assigned a few officers,” he said.
Senior police officials said the department would think of reviewing and revoking the sedition charges slapped on the cartoonist only after the probe was completed.
“Since it is a serious offence, its review and verification will take some time. We will come to the conclusion of revoking the charges after that,” Mr. Nangre-Patil said. He said the report would be separate from the charge sheet, which would be filed in the case.
“I will verify if proper Sections have been applied in the case. We will keep informing our seniors from time to time about the findings in the case, but we will submit the report before the court,” Mr. Padwal said.
Mr. Trivedi, who was released on bail on Wednesday, has been booked for sedition and under Sections of the Information Technology Act and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act. His website too has been banned by the Mumbai Police.

One other thing. Sania Mirza was also photographed with her feet in
front of an Indian flag. Why was she let off without so much as a slap
on the wrist?
Only in India will you find porous borders remaining porous even after a
group of men infiltrated our country by those borders and waged war
against our country, while the police and intelligence agencies are busy
trying to find out if worthless ministers are going to be slapped and if
cartoonists deserve to be indicted under sedition laws.
we now require investigation at ACP level to look into cartoons, the
material used in that cartoon ,color used, source of the paper and cloth
who provided him to make those posters, the mill where those paper were
made, the factory where those paints was manufactured, the strokes used
to draw the cartoon. Everything need to be looked into greater detail.
At what time, he drew those cartoon, the place where he drew it, what
was his state of mind when he drew it, the cost of material and ink ,
was it funded by some anti-national foreign fund?
He explained his act. He is neither anti national nor intended to. The real anti nationals are at large escaping without punishment. Mr.Aseen is fighting corruption the best way he could in the way of cartoons. He is a real patriotic person. The corrupt are making noises as they r being hit at.
Trivedi had the right to post cartoons touching the core issue of corruption, but within the limits of State law. Being young, he was aggressive in his approach without knowing the law of the land. There are upteen ways to express one's feelings on any burning issue. Therefore, the abusive and indecent expression of Trivedi in the present case needs to be examined. Trivedi could have helped in closing the matter by apolizing, as suggested to him by many, for his not so mature cortoons.
I Support Aseem Trivedi there is nothing wrong he done.He shows the
inner feelings of indian people towards the Parliament.
Police are wasting their time and money on Aseem Trivedi. They
should focus on terrorists and not on cartoonists. Aseem Trivedi
with all his bad cartoons cannot be seen as a traitor!
This man has insulted the nation by his posters and not cartoons. So long he is not apologizing for his deeds ,he should face the sedition laws.He has no right to defame the nation and its em blames.Tomorrow it may so happen that the news channels will show that the anti nationals burning national flag.
