Accidental firing at routine drill, one killed

In a freak incident, an army personnel was killed and five others injured when they were hit by stray bullets during a routine firing exercise in Assam’s Baksa district along the Indo-Bhutan border on Monday.

Joseph, belonging to the Madras Regiment operating under 107 Mountain Brigade, was killed when he was struck by a bullet during the routine firing exercise of the brigade at Sukanjuli in the Bhutan foothills, official sources said.

Five other army personnel — G Gandhi, R Gobardhan, Binod, Harish and P Rao — were injured after being hit by stray bullets and have been admitted to hospital.

Senior army and police officers went to the spot and investigations were on.
