Shocked MPs demand death penalty for rapists
Reflecting the nationwide outrage, anguish and grief over the horrific rape and battery of a young physiotherapy student in a moving bus in South Delhi, angry members in both the Houses of Parliament demanded the death penalty for the perpetrators.
Members in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha expressed serious concern over repeated and frequent incidents of rape and assault on women in the national capital where law and order is controlled directly by the Union Home Ministry.
Senior BJP leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said the death penalty should be introduced for rapists. “What is the government doing to curb rape cases in the capital?” she asked.
Girija Vyas of the Congress pointed out that there was no security on buses used by the public in Delhi. She said that rape cases need to be fast-tracked in a special court. She also urged the house to pass a bill on sexual assault on women.
In the Lok Sabha, Speaker Meira Kumar led the House in expressing outrage over the “spine-chilling’’ incident, saying it was shameful for the entire society. She asked the government to take strong steps immediately to ensure security for women.
Several members in the Rajya Sabha, including Najma Heptullah (BJP), Vasanthy Stanley of the DMK and V. Maitreyan (AIADMK), demanded that the “culprits should be hanged till death.’’
Samajwadi Party member and cinestar of yesteryears Jaya Bachchan broke down in the Upper House. She stood in protest for quite some time and said that an act of sexual assault should be treated on par with murder. “I am terribly disturbed...I am very shocked,’’ Ms. Bachchan said in a choked voice.
Noted jurist and former Law Minister Ram Jethmalani demanded removal of the Delhi Police chief over the failure to stop the “heinous’’ crime.
BSP chief Mayawati said the law should be amended to ensure stronger action in such cases. “Nothing will happen by only arresting the perpetrators. Give them stringent punishment,’’ she said.
Condemning the incident of rape, CPI leader D. Raja said that India cannot claim to be a civilised society if such brutal crimes continue to occur against women.
Derek O’Brien of Trinamool Congress said he felt “nervous and scared as the father of a 17-year-old daughter’’ as Delhi was becoming the “rape capital” of the country.
Later, making a statement in Parliament, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde announced that a special task force, at the level of Home Secretary, would be constituted to look into the safety issues for women in Delhi by taking into consideration the suggestions made by MPs.
He said that a Criminal Law Amendment Bill, 2012 has already been introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 4 with the objective of improving the conviction rate in rape cases.

Every time an incident like this happens, the houses roar and we grunt.
There are no steps taken to tighten the law, nothing done to educate and
refresh the knowledge base of the police personnel. Above all these,
there is no adequate punishment given to the culprits and after the
initial hoopla, the media and the people slow down and eventually
completely forget about the whole incident. Take Radhika Tanwar for
instance. When Manu Sharma's of the world get a "holiday" while serving
the sentence, how safe are the women of the country
Why not introduce a curfew for men? Especially for boys/men say, in the 12 to 60
age range? With exceptions for professional men who have to apply for a licence to
be outside like doctors, waiters etc.
Perhaps every single male in that age group not travelling in the company of a
woman or not possessing a curfew licence should be hunted down and fined. It
would serve to reverse the roles by getting men to seek protection from women
and teach them a valuable lesson. Only then would it sink into the heads of these
testosteronised morons the travails of being a woman in India today.
One could also consider making certain days of the week entirely "man free"...
death penalty to the rapists ! - Hope it gets implemented now.
IAS and IPS babu's should be held responsible for their job performance!
and if the job performance does not meet certain public set demands and
goals, they should be fired from the job.
"Mr Ansari then adjourned the House till noon". Why is it that
adjournments come so often and fruitful discussions so rarely?
The perpetrators of rape commit a crime, to my mind, more heinous than murder. The person murdered does not live to bear the aftermath of the consequences whereas the victim of a rape gets scarred for life. In the present case, the hapless victim has been brutalized, both in body and mind and is battling for life. Like Jaya Bachchan said, our system and the governing class fails to appreciate the magnitude of the consequences and the number of people from family and friends circle who suffer the effects of the resultant trauma.
I firmly and with all reasonableness support the demand for death penalty to the perpetrators of rape and other kinds of brutality upon women because the involved criminals are such scum that the earth can do without and their own families don't deserve them. Also, those in the rungs of authority and power who try to interfere / scuttle the due legal process must be recognized and punished as abettors.
With prayers for t
hose who have suffered and with utter rage against the mindset that brings about such suffering, I condemn the incident and I strongly condemn the attitude of the State Boss who never takes responsibility for any negligence / negatives but is in your face to usurp the credit, if any due.
All the attackers should be sentenced to death.
we should remember what justice VK Iyer said about Kasab. The criminnals may be product of society and should be forgiven. The girl who was raped should be paid handsomely and given free medical treatment. No punishment and NO Capital punishment.
Govt must remove the top cop. This will give a strong message to the culture of favoritism in appointments.
The real problems in nepotism and favoritism , that is percolating down. Today every criminal knows that police is lethargic.
AIMS must develop a vaccine of anti-rape dose to be given to child on birth and make compasory to all male of india.
Let's pray GOD to this invention happen soon.
Media and Entertainment has lost the spark of awakening and saving of humanity.
Female court is required to be approved by GoI. It should make female law and work on minutes.
Delhi is capital of inefficient leaders and crime against women rape is one of the hobbies Delhi criminals..
what we need is a cultural overhaul. Children, especially in the NCR regions and adjoining states should be taught to respect women starting from kindergaten. The police are from the same community and they cannot be trusted to respect or safegaurd women. A radical social change is the need of the hour!
"Ram Jethmalani (BJP) said he wished to convey to the Home Minister that “the crime situation in Delhi will not improve unless you remove the most notorious criminal... the present Police Commissioner of the city.”
What about he himself - who a set a record in defending and getting acquitals for the most notorious offenders!!!!!
Sheer debates will not solve the burning and unending problems. People of New Delhi are looking for constructive steps to control the raising crime rate. Thanks to the women members of the parliament for seriously raising the issue in House. Culprits should be punished sternly.
Had this rape victim been a NorthEatern, the police and government might tell NorthEastern to maintain dress code. Good that this time the victim is from India Mainland . The people from NorthEast has been suffering this kind of toture and sexual abuse long back. The Indians learn how to treat everyone equally. Bottom line, rapists must be produced before court and lock up for life.
1. mobiles should have emergency application with one touch button to dial 100 and sms location to police
2. woman should keep their mobile handy and call 100 whenever sense some danger. police must have GPS tracker to find out location from where call is made and sens moving PCR van immediately.
3. drunkards should not be allowed in public transports like buses and metro.
4. minimum 10 yr jail and lifetime ban from govt employment to rapists.
5. all rape cases must be disposed within three months.
The very daring nature of the crime points to self confidence in the felons that they will not
meet with any serious consequences. That kind of confidence can only be in an individual or
group, when they have clear convictions of escape and perceived support from person or
persons of real power. It is patently clear there is a serious law and order problem in the
capital state of the country. I would assume that, being the capital state and the city, it would
have the best law and order situation. Sadly and disgustingly that is not so and it would be
sending some negative signals to the rest of the world about the safety of people visiting the
country. The pervading nature of corruption has now found a companion in diminished law
and order. Unless people take upon themselves seriously and elect representatives who
stand on a platform of removing corruption and lawlessness and has the preparedness to
follow through, the country is on a slippery slop! Time is over for being spectators!
Rapes, Gang Rapes, Honour killings - Let us pray for the poor Indian
woman. Let the common man learn to manage rapes and rowdies, while
the rulers are busy with their own agenda. Unfortunately, priorities
are totally different for people inside and outside parliament, in
India.
A heinous crime, but what else can we expect in our country where the victim is
often blamed and ostracized and the perpetrator leeringly and proudly struts away
scot-free. In our movies, we make the rape victim commit suicide not the rapist. In
real life, the rapist will often ensure that the victim is murdered brutally after the
act.
What we need is exemplary punishment. Although it does not behoove a state
trying to impose rule of law to do so, public flagellation and castration are
certainly the sort of punishments to deter the Indian rapist. But even these require
action from our law enforcement, something you cannot count on.
Politicians of all colours will raise the issue and their voices but go back to
business as usual once the storm has subsided. What did the Congress do in all
the decades in power? What did the BJP do while it ruled Delhi? Nothing!
We speak of Mother India but rape her without compunction!
