Jharkhand mine toll mounts to 18

Two more bodies were recovered from the debris of the Rajmahal Open Cast Mine here on Sunday taking the death toll in the mining accident to 18.

The local administration and authorities of the Eastern Coalfield Limited revised the number of people still buried in the rubble to six.

Twenty-three people went missing after the accident on December 29, Sub-Divisional Officer Sanjay Kumar told The Hindu . Seventeen vehicles also got buried when the waste dump of the mine came crashing down.

Director-General of Mines, Safety, Rahul Guha, who visited the site of accident, said technical experts were making a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Experts of the Central Mine Planning and Disaster Institute (CMPDI), Ranchi, have installed a magnetometer to ascertain the magnetic field of the debris and locate the huge metallic objects buried in the dump. Excavation with the help of magnetometers “may help to extricate the bodies,” an official said.
