Bahrain on Monday expressed regret after an Indian national died during a protest over non-payment of salaries, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Monday. The MEA spokesperson said that the worker’s death was not due to police action and that he had fainted and died in a hospital.

MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said G.P. Zachariadis Overseas Ltd., a construction company that employs nearly 1,500 Indian workers, had been facing severe financial hardship. “Nearly 200 workers of the company had started a protest against non-payment of salary. During the protest, one of the workers, Narayanan Pitchai, fainted and this happened when the police authorities reached the site.”

The Hindu had reported on Monday that a protest by nearly 200 Indian workers had faced police action. Bahraini Ministry took to social media to announce the death of Pitchai.
