The EC on Friday announced that the by-election for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat would be held on February 4, the day when Punjab goes to Assembly polls.

An EC official said the last date for filing nominations would be January 18 while counting of votes would take place on March 11. Scrutiny of papers would be done on January 19 while the last date of withdrawal is January 21.

The seat fell vacant after Congress leader Amarinder Singh’s resignation after the SC pronounced that Punjab’s law of terminating pact pertaining to sharing of water from the Satluj-Yamuna Link canal was invalid. — Special Correspondent
