Seventy-seven NGOs have been put under Government’s watch list and their names have been circulated to Indian missions abroad which have been told to keep a check on visas being considered for members of these organisations.
The Government action comes close on the heels of four NGOs being put under the scanner for allegedly fuelling protests against the Kudankulam nuclear project in Tamil Nadu.
During a high-level meeting on Economic Intelligence recently, it was informed that a list of 77 “suspect” NGOs prepared by the Home Ministry was handed over to the External Affairs Ministry, official sources said.
The list was prepared by the Home Ministry after a discreet probe by security agencies with the help of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Central Economic Intelligence Bureau in which role of some NGO’s especially those based in the United States and European Union was looked into, the sources said.
Minutes of the meeting in which the Intelligence Bureau top brass was present show that the issue figured, highly-placed sources said.
However, Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh has denied that 77 NGOs were being probed. “It is incorrect to say that 77 NGOs are being investigated. We are looking into the accounts of 12-13 Indian NGOs with regard to allegation of funds diversion,” Mr. Singh had said.
According to the minutes of the meeting, the MEA official informed the meeting that the list provided by the Home Ministry had been circulated for “appropriate action.”

Why put these NGO's "under scanner"? Close them or ban them. These NGO's are funded by foreign money to undermine the national progress and national security. If Hindustan wants to be in the list of nations that "matter", it needs tons of electricity to keep the light bulbs from flickering. There is already immense shortfall of wattage produced and these NGO's will have or make up any cause for no new nuclear, coal or even gas fired power plants from coming on line.
Yes, finally Govt has woken up to some of the NGOs' who using the cover of NGO spread their own agenda be it religion, create trouble locally, take up issues to destabilize the country. Most of them get funding from extreme societies although some are funded by western countries as a proganda tool. Only UN certifies agencies should be recognized and Govts must put an end to these NGOs'
There is an urgent need to monitor the activities of NGOs getting funds from foreign countries. though the objective of permitting NGOs was laudable most of these functioning in India has only one objective;ie accumulating assets by manipulating accounts. Many NGOs functioning in Tamilnadu exploit women's self help groups by extracting hefty commissions in collusion with Bank officials. A natural calamity is a boon to these NGOs which enable them in huge exploitation including inducing mass religious conversions. Many are working as the agents of foreign powers out to block our development. All NGOs have to be subjected to periodical evaluation and appropriate corrective action taken. NGOs need not have to be afraid of if they function according to the objectives for which they are registered
Governments are using NGO's in their favour which is wrong politics and be spoiling the chances of the political parties. People watch and they take note of those events which are being played through NGO's. Many of the NGO's are not playing their role honestly and correctly. They must think of play a role not on behalf of Political parties but should play a role which maintain their integrity. Integrity is part and parcel of life' role toward elimination of corruption and if they work, India may reduce the corruption.
Better late than never.
