7 dead in Dehradun; flood alert in U.P., Bihar

At least 24 people are feared dead in rain-related incidents of cloudbursts, flash floods and landslips across Uttarakhand in the last 48 hours.

Seven persons were killed on Saturday when two houses in the Kathbangla area were buried in a landslip triggered by incessant rain, taking the toll from rain-related incidents in Uttarakhand to 24 in the past 48 hours. The director of the Dehradun Meteorological Centre, Anand Sharma, said up to 135 mm of rainfall was recorded over August 15 and 16.

Two helicopters were deployed to rescue 102 people stranded in the Bairagarh area in Pauri district on Saturday. The Rishikesh- Kedarnath national highway, Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway, Rishikesh-Gangotri, and Rishikesh-Yamunotri highways were blocked at several places due to landslips.

Rapti in spate in U.P.

The Centre on Saturday issued a “high flood situation” warning in Uttar Pradesh after water in the Rapti rose above the danger level. The river was flowing at 0.37 metres above the danger level of 104.62, a Water Resources Ministry statement said.

Bihar evacuation

Thousands of people in Darbhanga, West Champaran and Nalanda districts in Bihar have been affected following breaches in the Kamla Balan and Gandak river embankments. Rescue operations have been launched and the Chief Secretary and other top officials conducted an aerial survey.DMD Special Secretary Anirudh Kumar said nearly 45,000 people had been affected by the flood in Darbhanga district. Four teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were coming from Kolkata to assist the eight other teams already present in Bihar, he said.
