5 killed as trains collide in Jharkhand

Five people were killed and 10 others injured in a collision between the New Delhi-bound Brahmaputra Mail and a goods train at the Karanpurato station in Jharkhand's Sahibganj district, 500 km from here, on Wednesday.

Divisional Railway Manager (Malda) Harsh Kumar said the goods train was stationary on the main line at the station from Tuesday midnight due to some technical problem. It suddenly slipped off the rails and collided with a Sleeper class coach of the Brahmaputra Mail, which was passing on the parallel track. The incident took place at 5.50 a.m.

Bijoy Roy of the 4th Battalion, Assam Rifles, Giriya Devi (55), Dinesh Mahaldar (50), Narendra (38) and two unidentified men were confirmed dead by the railways.

Mr. Kumar and other officers reached the site by a special train in the morning. An accident relief train from Sahibganj reached the spot at 7.10 a.m. Railway Minister Dinesh Trivedi has announced an ex gratia of Rs. 5 lakh to the nearest kin of each dead person, Rs. 50,000 each to the grievously injured and Rs. 10,000 each to passengers with minor injuries.
