36-hour strike begins in Manipur

The 36-hour general strike called by the committee, protesting against the murder of excavator driver Devraj Maishnam on October 14 in Senapati district, began at 5 a.m. in Manipur on Monday, disrupting normal life.

Stone pelting on cars and other vehicles in some parts of Imphal were reported.

The Imphal West district police superintendent, Jayanta K., told reporters that a criminal gang had murdered the driver. Four of the five suspects including a woman arrested so far belong to the same family. Mr. Jayanta said that three more suspects will soon be rounded up in connection with the case.

Police recovered the excavator from the suspects.

The accused have been remanded in police custody till November 6.
