Three Jash-e-Muhammad (JeM) militants were killed in a gunfight and a soldier was killed in Pakistani firing in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday.

“Three militants hiding in a cave in Pulwama’s Tral have been killed in a day-long operation,” a police official said.

A Srinagar-based police spokesman said a soldier, Muhammad Naseer, was killed in Pakistani firing violating the ceasefire at Chell Post in Rajouri.

The gunfight between militants and security forces erupted on Saturday morning after forces cordoned off a cave in a hillock in Satura village where the militants were hiding.

The police identified the slain Jaish militants as Ishfaq Ahmad Khan and Mukhtiyar Ahmad Lone, both residents of Tral. “However, the third militant, Hassan Bhai, is a foreign militant,” said the police official.

Both local militants were fresh recruits. Khan had joined militant ranks on March 25 and Lone on June 15 this year, according to the police.

In a separate incident, militants lobbed a grenade at a CRPF patrol in Kulgam’s Larnoo area. One assistant sub-inspector (ASI), Rajinder Singh, of 18 Battaltion, was injured in the attack.

“The assailant was also held from the spot. He has admitted to throwing the grenade,” said a police official.
