Twenty-two people were killed when a private bus carrying a marriage party plunged into the Pahuj river in Jalaun district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday.

The accident occurred at 1 a.m. when the driver lost control of the bus while it was crossing a pontoon bridge across the river.

The marriage party was coming from Saskepura village in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh.

Brij Lal, Additional Director-General (Law and Order), said the bus was on its way to the residence of Harpal Singh in Rudrapura village under the Madhavgarh police station area in Jalaun. It was transporting 62 passengers.

Though there was not enough water in the river, the victims were trapped in the vehicle. He said 40 people were rescued and admitted to a community health centre.
