At least two militants and an army Major were killed in an encounter that followed a foiled infiltration bid near the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
Sources told The Hindu that the gunbattle took place in Manjakote area of the Mendhar sector. At least seven militants sneaked in about 11.30 p.m. on Tuesday and “after crossing the LoC, fired indiscriminately on a patrol party of 5 Maratha Regiment in which, Major Akash Singh, got killed.” In retaliatory action by the Army, two militants were killed while the other intruders escaped into nearby bushes and forest. The Army claimed to have killed four militants, but only two bodies have been recovered from the forest.
The entire encounter area has been cordoned off and a search operation is on.
The bodies of the two militants and Major Akash Singh have been brought to Mendhar.
