Two Assam Rifles troopers were killed and another seriously wounded when two crack teams of the paramilitary force mistook each other for militants on Saturday and exchanged fire. The incident took place at 9:30 p.m. at the mountainous highway 39, between Khudengthabi and Lokchao, near the international border.
The dead personnel were identified as Suresh (27) of Wangjing in Thoubal district of Manipur and Chauhan, 32, a non-commissioned officer from Uttar Pradesh. Pankaj Kumar of the 9 Assam Rifles, who hails from Bihar, was injured.
