1993 blast accused extradited to India

Tahir Merchant alias Takla, an absconding accused in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case has been extradited to India and arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Anand Somani, Superintendent of Police, Special Task Force, CBI, told The Hindu over telephone that Merchant was extradited from Abu Dhabi. He arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon, after which he was produced before the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) court. He has been remanded to CBI custody till June 14.

Mr. Somani said Merchant had arranged the finance for the blasts, and was also linked to conspirators Tiger Memon and Dawood Ibrahim.

In 2007, a special TADA court had convicted 100 accused, including actor Sanjay Dutt, in connection with the blasts.
