At least 17 persons were feared killed and 24 others injured, when a private bus in which they were travelling fell into a 100-metre deep gorge near Sundernagar sub-division of Mandi district late on Tuesday, official sources said.

So far, 17 dead bodies have been recovered from the badly mangled bus, the sources said.

The ill-fated bus was on its way to Sundernagar from neighbouring Bilaspur town, when the accident took place near Bhawana, about five kilometre from Sundernagar around 7.15 pm in the evening, the sources said.

The injured have been taken to civil hospital Sundernagar and also zonal hospital Mandi, the sources said.

There were around 50 passengers on board the bus, officials said adding that the cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained.

Superintendent of Police Mandi, Sonal Agnihotri and Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Sundernagar RK Gautam were supervising the operation at the accident site.
