As turmoil hit Turkey, 149 Indian athletes are in that country participating in the World School Games at Trabzon.

Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Vijay Goel sought to allay fears of their relatives and said all of them were safe. “I have ascertained from the organisers and the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) that all children are safe,” he said at the Sports Authority of India’s Southern Regional Centre here. “According to my knowledge, the games are on,” he said.

Mr. Goel said the SAI, with the help of the SGFI, set up a control room. The Sports Ministry, through its official Twitter handle, has asked those in need of any information to contact B.B. Saxena, deputy leader of Indian contingent in Trabzon, at +905312131652.

“We have contacted the families of the participants and told them that their wards are safe,” Mr. Goel said. “I have contacted the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian Ambassador in Turkey Rahul Kulshreshth, and he has said everybody is safe.”
