106 nominations filed for Presidential poll

The Returning Officer for the July 19 Presidential poll has received 106 nominations as the time for filing of papers ended on Saturday.

Of them, 33 have been rejected as the candidates did not enclose the mandatory copy of the voters list containing their names.

The rest of the applications have been kept for scrutiny on July 2.

Besides UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee and NDA-AIADMK-BJD backed contestant P.A. Sangma, three women have filed their papers.

The nomination of a woman candidate has already been rejected.

While Mr. Mukherjee has filed four sets of papers, Mr. Sangma, who filed three sets on June 28, filed one more set on Saturday.

Some of the candidates too filed at least two sets of papers. Altogether the papers of 42 contestants have been kept for scrutiny. The electors for the poll consist of a total of 4896 members - 776 MPs and 4120 MLAs. Nominated members of Parliament/Assemblies are not eligible to vote.

The total value of their votes is 10,98,882. The value of MLAs vote is 5,49,474 and that of MPs 5,49,408.
