Attacking Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for not showing up before the Special Investigation Team in connection with a riots case, the Congress on Sunday said it was “contemptuous” and showed that he “loves to hide.”
“The SIT's direction to Narendra Modi to appear before it shows the seriousness and importance attached to the issue by the apex court,” party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said.
Mr. Modi was summoned by the SIT on a complaint by Zakia Jaffrey, wife of the slain former MP Ehsan Jaffrey, in the 2002 Gulberg Society riots case.
The BJP remained non-committal on whether Mr. Modi would depose before the SIT, but said the State government “shall act as per the law.”
Spokesman Rajiv Pratap Rudy said: “The government of Gujarat has made it clear that it shall act as per the law. This government has always supported and respected the law and will abide by it. It has the highest respect for the Supreme Court order.” However, he alleged that the whole process might be an attempt to tarnish Mr. Modi.
