The legal fraternity of India will leave for Lahore and Islamabad next week to forge closer bonds with their counterparts in Pakistan.
Involving students and alumni of law schools, the Indian group will be in Pakistan for five days and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the legal fraternity of Pakistan.
The 10-member delegation will be led by Solicitor-General Gopal Subramaniam and the former Union Law Minister, Shanti Bhushan. The visit is being organised by “The Jurists,” a registered trust formed by students of the national law schools in India.
“The highlight will be a meeting between the Indian delegation and the heads and students of law schools of Pakistan on December 24. Both teams will sign a MoU on various topics related to legal ties,'' said Advocate Raghav Awasthi of “The Jurists.”
New possibilities
They will look into the possibility of resource-sharing between law students and researchers in both countries, establishment of a peer-review mechanism for evaluation of legal research works, and finalise the details of an India-Pakistan socio-legal debate.
The two sides will present a road map of their legal collaboration on December 23 in Lahore.
The delegation will meet Pakistan Federal Minister for Human Rights Syed Mumtaz Alam Gilani in Islamabad on December 26 to discuss the draft Pakistani Hindu Marriages Registration Bill, expected to be tabled in the next session of the Pakistan National Assembly.
The initiative is aided by Pakistani non-governmental organisations SEEPLA and Jaag Welfare Movement. The Lahore University Law School and the Lahore University of Management Sciences are involved in the initiative.
