The former Supreme Court Judge said he was disappointed by the Centre's stand
The former Supreme Court Judge V.R. Krishna Iyer on Sunday appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the Centre’s stand not to approve the elevation of senior advocate Gopal Subramanium as Supreme Court judge.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Mr. Krishna Iyer said he was disappointed by the stand as Mr. Subramanium was unanimously selected by the Collegium.
He said, “Mr. Subramanium is a sound lawyer with great integrity and will be a tribute to the Supreme Court Bench if he is installed as a Judge of the Supreme Court. However, to eliminate him from the post will be an indefensible disaster, a disappointment which the country need not suffer from at all.”
He said: “As a retired Judge of the Supreme Court myself, I regret this measure of the Prime minister. I hope he [Mr. Modi] will reconsider this wrong step. I look forward to great good things happening from the Prime Minister.”
