Kasab may be moved to Pune

October 06, 2010 12:30 am | Updated November 28, 2021 09:35 pm IST - Mumbai:

The Mumbai police may shift Mohammad Ajmal Amir Kasab, the lone surviving gunman of the November 26, 2008, attack in Mumbai, out of the Arthur Road Jail due to security reasons.

“The matter has been discussed, but the final decision will be taken only after the High Court appeal is decided,” Himanshu Roy, Joint Commissioner (Crime), told The Hindu on Tuesday.

The Arthur Road Jail is in the heart of the city. Kasab may be shifted to the Yerwada Jail, Pune, which is much bigger than the Arthur Road Jail, and comparatively isolated. This would make it easier for the authorities to scan any suspicious movement.

The Bombay High Court is yet to confirm Kasab's conviction. The proceedings, which will begin on October 18, may take at least two months to complete.
