Accusing Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi of “shedding crocodile tears” over the Supreme Court’s decision on Mullaperiyar Dam dispute with Kerala, AIADMK supremo Jayalalithaa on Sunday said his inefficiency resulted in the forfeiture of the state’s rights.
“It was his inefficiency that resulted in the forfeiture of Tamil Nadu’s rights,” she said in a statement referring to Mr. Karunanidhi’s remarks expressing regret over the decision to refer the inter-state dispute to a Constitution Bench.
Reacting to the November 10 Supreme Court order, Mr. Karunanidhi had on Nov 13 voiced apprehensions that the adage ’justice delayed is justice denied’ might come true.
Accusing Mr. Karunanidhi of not taking action to increase the water level in the dam to 142 feet after the Supreme Court allowed Tamil Nadu’s plea in 2006, she said he was now trying to blame the court for not reposing faith in its own order.
“When Mr. Karunanidhi had the order of no less an authority than the Supreme Court to back him, why did he give credence to a local law of the Kerala Government (that prohibited raising the water level)?” she asked.
Even now when the Supreme Court said it was planning to refer the dispute to a Constitution Bench, “the very least that could have been done by Tamil Nadu was to register its protest vociferously. This too was not done,” she claimed.
“Now the five-judge Bench has to be constituted.
Traditionally such benches do not meet more than three or four times a year and Mullaperiyar issue is therefore destined to go into the backburner,” she said.
