Trudeau offers prayer at Golden Temple

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Wednesday arrived at the Amritsar international airport to pay obeisance at the Golden Temple here. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri and Punjab Cultural Affairs and Tourism Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu received Trudeau and a delegation of Canadian Ministers and MPs at the Sri Guru Ramdas International Airport at around 10:40 a.m. Later, Mr. Trudeau paid obeisance at the Golden Temple, the holiest of Sikh shrines. The Canadian Premier will also visit the Partition Museum.

The two-day Uttar Pradesh Investors Summit 2018 began at the Indira Gandhi Pratishthan at Lucknow. It was inaugurated by Narendra Modi and State CM Yogi Adityanath. Big industrialists including Mukesh Ambai and Gautam Adani were present.

Actor Kamal Haasan visited the house of former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in Rameswaram and interacted with the family members of centenarian A.P.J.M. Maraikayar and others on Wednesday. Mr. Hassan drove down on the school road, few hundred meters away from Kalam’s house but didn’t stop there as he was denied permission to interact with the Mandapam Panchayat Union Middle School students.

Cash-strapped Venezuela on Tuesday became the first country to launch its own version of bitcoin, a move President Nicolas Maduro celebrated as putting his country on the world’s technological forefront. In its first hours on the market, the so-called petro racked in $735 million worth in purchases, Maduro said without providing details. The petro is backed by Venezuela’s crude oil reserves, the largest in the world, yet it hit the market as the socialist country sinks deeper into an economic crisis marked by soaring inflation and food shortages that put residents in lines for hours to buy common products.

Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway was the surprise silver medalist Wednesday after turning in a sizzling run as the 19th racer on the course. Mowinckel also earned silver in the giant slalom at these Games.
