The murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh was back in focus when members of the Gauri Lankesh Balaga protested in the streets of Bengaluru against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for the delay in arresting suspects who were involved in her death. She was shot dead by unknown assailants outside her home in the city in September.

The Supreme Court commenced its final hearing in the Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute on Tuesday, a day before the 25th anniversary of the demolition of medieval-era structure. A sect of Muslims, under the banner of Shia Central Waqf Board of Uttar Pradesh, had approached the court, offering a solution that a mosque could be built in a Muslim-dominated area at a “reasonable distance” from the disputed site in Ayodhya.

Veteran film actor Shashi Kapoor of the 70s and 80s actor was cremated with state honours at the Santa Cruz Hindu crematorium around noon on Tuesday. The actor-producer’s body was taken to the crematorium from his Juhu home in an ambulance at 11.45 a.m.

Celebrities such as Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan, Shyam Benegal, Shah Rukh Khan, Ayan Mukherji, Hansal Mehta, Nandita Das, Lara Dutta with husband Mahesh Bhupati, and Maharashtra politician Ramdas Athawale were amongst those who paid their last respects to the actor. Writer Salim Khan, who gave Shashi Kapoor the iconic one-line “Mere paas maa hai” in Deewar , along with lyricist Javed Akhtar, was there as well.

It is an annual affair in Mumbai where lakhs of people converge at Shivaji Park, Dadar to pay homage to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar on December 6, his birth anniversary. This year too, several Amebedkarites, as they are popularly known, have been staying in make-shift tents near Dr. Ambedkar’s memorial, Chaityabhoomi.

The Mumbai civic authorities have asked Ambedkarites to stay in a nearby BMC school in view of cyclone Ockhi.
